Transit Crucial to Tourism

52% of Vacationers This Summer will Rely on Transit

As Americans look for ways to cut travel costs this summer, many vacationers seek affordability through the use of a city's local public transportation system.

According to APTA's Green Travel Forecast,  52 percent of summer vacationers will use local public transit systems to get around during their trip. This report confirms the recent FPTA article in which tourism experts say that transit infrastructure is increasingly important to Florida's tourism industry.

Seniors & Transit

Transportation for America released a report that shows the importance of public transportation to the aging baby boomer demographic.

Check out the FPTA release and the link to the full report. Notice that Miami is third best in the nation for transit services to seniors.

Why Business Leaders are "4Transit"...

As President of Floridians for Better Transportation, and as someone who once commuted via public transit every day for seven years, Doug Callaway is one of Florida's premier experts on the importance of transportation to the business community.

Doug said recently, "I am for transit because it's such an important part of the equation and we need it to make Florida's transportation system whole". Noting that the great majority of transit rides are taken by people going to/from work, Doug went on to say, "Traffic congestion is bad for business. For Florida to remain competitive, we need to efficiently move workers, visitors, shoppers, freight, and tourists. Transit plays a key role in facilitating that flow of commerce".

Anne Hotte agrees. As CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, she invited the IM4Transit Campaign Director to address business members at their June breakfast meeting. Anne said, "I am for transit because the business community knows that people need alternatives to get to work, to shop, to visit, etc. when gas prices might otherwise keep them at home." With a major passenger seaport and airport nearby, Anne also said, "Not everyone wants the hassle of renting a car and fighting traffic and parking when they are on vacation, Florida needs to continue to invest in transit solutions."

Leticia Adams, Director of Infrastructure & Governance Policy at the Florida Chamber of Commerce, was one of the first people to sign on to the IM4Transit campaign. "I am for transit, quite simply, because it makes good business sense. Public transportation and transportation projects are important to the economy of Florida".

Anthony Beckford, Chair of the Florida Public Transportation Association, said, "Transit benefits both riders and nonriders. Fact sheets about the economic, traffic congestion, environmental and energy independence benefits of transit are available at www.FloridaTransit.org. We welcome the opportunity to partner with Chambers on the IM4Transit Campaign to promote the benefits of transit to Florida's business community".

IM4Transit Welcomed at

Chambers of Commerce

Congratulations to the Palms West Chamber of Commerce for hosting a successful Florida Green Conference in West Palm Beach recently. The conference featured a transportation panel with IM4Transit Director Denis Eirikis, Chuck Cohen of PalmTran, Joe Giulletti of Tri-Rail, and Robyn Chiarelli of FDOT.

On June 10, IM4Transit made the keynote presentation to a rousing breakfast meeting of the Hollywood Chamber of Florida. When asked how many business people in the room think that transit is important to the economy of Florida, nearly everyone stepped forward and, by raising their hands, proclaimed themselves to be "4Transit."  Their next newsletter will urge their 1000+ members to join the IM4Transit Campaign.
