TALK TO YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS

An Editorial from Wes Watson,
CEO Florida Public Transportation Association

As expected, the rise in gas prices to near $4 a gallon has resulted in increased ridership pressures on our state's transit systems. Personal stories abound of people parking their cars and moving to transit in order to save money.  Even our bus bicycle racks are coming more into play,  with many riders biking to bus stops, then boarding our vehicles.

At the same time, unfortunately, our transit systems are subject to the same economic pressures as other parts of goverment.  While many local government officials have done their best to maintain funding for transit, others have reduced funding.  This has placed some of our transit managers in the conundrum of trying to meet increased ridership, with reduced resources.  When faced with this, we try to still serve as many potential riders as possible, but sometimes have to make painful cuts or reduce some services.

The inevitable calls, e-mails, and letters arrive on our managers' desks, decrying the negative effect on peoples' lives.  About two-thirds of our riders depend on transit to get to work.  And with constrained funds, to provide service to one area means cutting it elsewhere.

While our managers welcome feedback from the public, which does help us to make informed decisions, the buck literally stops with the funding we receive.  This is mostly determined by local policy makers.  It would be of greater help to those adversely affected for their comments to be directed, as well, to their local country commissioners or city councilpersons.  In politics, like most anything else, squeaky wheels get the most notice.  Policy makers also need to hear from transit users so they can give public transit appropriate consideration for resources.

GoLine Driver Wins Monthly Drawing

Indian River County GoLine driver Jerry Mica is the winner of the fourth monthly drawing for the $500 prize of an HDTV.

This serves as a reminder that 20,000 Floridians are directly employed by Florida's transit industry, and we encourage them all to sign up for IM4Transit. The job (and route) they help save, may be their own.

Thanks to the sponsorship provided by TecTrans, there are two more monthly drawings open to everyone who has signed up on the IM4Transit.org web site since the start of the campaign. Now would be a great time to urge your friends and family to support public transportation. Click here for full story on Jerry Mica's win.
